Can The Laws Of Physics Disprove God?

"I believed in God (I am now an atheist) when I listened to the question at a session, first posed by Einstein, and was shocked by its style and depth: ‘If there is a God who created the universe and ALL of its laws of physics, does God follow his own laws? Or can God surpass his own laws, like travelling faster than the speed of light and thus being able to be in two different spaces at the same time?’ Could the solution help us verify whether or not God exists or is this where scientific pragmatism and religious faith overlap, with NO correct answer?" David Frost, 67, Los Angeles.

I was in lockdown when I came across this question and was immediately fascinated. It’s no wonder about the timing – disastrous events, such as pandemics, often make us to question the existence of God: if there is a merciful God, why is a calamity like this happening? So the idea that God might be “limited” by the laws of physics – which also administer chemistry and biology and thus the bounds of medical science – was an interesting one to discover.

If God wasn’t able to break the laws of physics, she arguably wouldn’t be as powerful as you’d expect a supreme being to be. But if she could, why haven’t we seen any evidence of the laws of physics ever being broken in the universe?

But is it true? Not long ago ago, a group of researchers suggested that particles called tachyons moved above light speed. Luckily, their existence as real particles is considered highly unlikely. If they did exist, they would have an arbitrary mass and the fabric of space and time would become distorted – leading to defilements of causation (and possibly a headache for God).

It appears, so far, that no object has been detected that can move faster than the speed of light. This in itself does not say everything at all about God. It simply supports the knowledge that light travels very fast indeed.
